WASHINGTON, George, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and 1st President of the United States; born in Westmoreland County, VA., February 22, 1732; schooled by tutors and Anglican clergymen; received a surveyor's license from College of William and Mary; worked as surveyor for Culpeper County, VA.; accepted a commission with the Virginian militia as a major during the French and Indian War; attended the First Virginia Convention and First Continental Congress; appointed as General and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in the American War of Independence; elected president of the Constitutional Convention; unanimously elected as President of the United States in 1789; unanimously reelected in 1792; died December 14, 1799; interred at his estate in Mount Vernon, VA.
