CARTER, James Earl, Jr.; 39th President of the United States; born in Plains, GA., October 1, 1924; schooled at Plains High School; enrolled in Georgia Southwestern College in 1941; enrolled in Georgia Tech in 1942; enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. in 1943; promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1949; enrolled at Union College in Schenectady, NY. in 1953; elected to Georgia State Senate in 1962; unsuccessful candidate for Democratic nomination for Governor of Georgia in 1966; elected as Democratic Governor of Georgia in 1970; elected as Democratic President of the United States in 1976; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980; founded the Carter Center in 1982; awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
