Biography
a Senator from Ohio; born in Newark, N.J., February 22, 1770; pursued preparatory studies; graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1791; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1796 and commenced practice in Cincinnati, Ohio; one of three judges appointed to hold court in Cincinnati, Vincennes, and Detroit; member, Territorial councils of Ohio 1799-1802; member, State house of representatives 1814-1816; appointed judge of the Ohio Supreme Court in 1821 and served until his resignation in December 1828; elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William H. Harrison and served from December 10, 1828, to March 3, 1831; was not a candidate for renomination in 1831; member of the commission appointed in 1831 by the States of Virginia and Kentucky to settle their controversy over the statute of limitation passed by Kentucky; resumed the practice of law; president of the Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio; president of the Cincinnati branch of the United States Bank; died in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 10, 1853; interment in Spring Grove Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
