Biography

Representative from New York; born in New Lebanon, Columbia County, N.Y., January 27, 1800; pursued an academic course; studied law in Canton, N.Y.; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Ogdensburg; postmaster of Ogdensburg, N.Y., 1830-1833; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1832 and 1840; elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); was not a candidate for renomination in 1836; commissioner to treat with the New York Indians 1837-1839; appointed Register of the Treasury and served from April 1, 1845, to May 27, 1847, when he was appointed Solicitor of the Treasury, and continued in this office until October 31, 1849; appointed Assistant Attorney General and served from 1855 to 1858; appointed solicitor of the court of claims and served from 1858 to 1861; retired from public life in 1867 and engaged in literary pursuits; died in Washington, D.C., October 24, 1876; interment in Glenwood Cemetery.
