Biography
Representative from New York; born in Half Moon, Saratoga County, N.Y., October 11, 1787; completed academic studies; studied medicine and law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Herkimer, Herkimer County, N.Y.; district attorney 1823-1825; elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the Nineteenth Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1825-March 3, 1833); chairman, Committee on Naval Affairs (Twentieth through Twenty-second Congresses); judge of Herkimer County 1830-1833; canal commissioner of New York 1833-1835; register of the land office at Saginaw, Mich., in 1836; returned to Herkimer, N.Y.; member of the New York state assembly in 1841, 1842, and 1844; delegate to the New York state constitutional convention in 1846; naval officer of New York City from May 3, 1845, until his death in Brooklyn, N.Y., September 27, 1848.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
