Biography
Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Chester County, Pa., in 1739; as a child moved with his parents to Lancaster County; attended the rural schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced; moved to Westmoreland County in 1770 and settled on Dunlaps Creek, near the Monongahela River; justice of the peace in 1773; member of the first Pennsylvania Assembly in 1776; member of the supreme council in 1777; upon the formation of Washington County in 1781 was appointed prothonotary and served until March 28, 1789, when he resigned, having been elected to Congress; commissioned a justice of Washington County on November 21, 1786; member of the state ratification convention in 1787; elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the First Congress (March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791); declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1790; again a member of the state assembly in 1791; elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Third Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1795); died in Washington, Pa., March 2, 1796; interment in the old graveyard on First Walnut Street; reinterment in Washington Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
