Biography

a Delegate and Representative from Connecticut; born in Hartford, Conn., July 12, 1743; attended the common schools; went to sea in 1761; became first mate of a vessel and subsequently master; served as deputy and commissary general 1775-1778 during the Revolution; Member of the Continental Congress in 1788; member of the Connecticut ratification convention in 1788; elected to the First, Second, and Third Congresses (March 4, 1789-March 3, 1795); was not a candidate for reelection; member of the State house of representatives in 1795 and of the State executive council 1795-1801; engaged in agricultural pursuits; died in Hartford, Conn., April 30, 1804; interment in Ancient Burying Ground.
